YouTube Transcript & Caption Copy
Privacy Policy
Last updated:
YouTube Transcript & Caption Copy is a Chrome extension that helps users copy YouTube transcripts, captions, and subtitles, and prepare summary prompts for ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.
Data processed by the extension
The extension processes the following data only to provide its user-facing features:
- The current YouTube video page URL and video title.
- Caption track metadata and transcript/caption text available from YouTube for the current video.
- User-selected settings such as caption language, output language, summary prompt text, and extension UI display language.
- A temporary prompt prepared for ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude when the user clicks an AI summary button.
How data is stored
The extension uses Chrome local storage on the user’s device to save:
- preferredLanguage: the user’s preferred caption language.
- preferredOutputLanguage: the user’s preferred summary output language.
- preferredUILanguage: the user’s preferred extension UI language.
- summaryPrompt: the user’s editable summary prompt body.
- pendingLLMPrompt: a temporary prompt used to hand off content to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. This is removed after the target page successfully receives it. If the handoff does not complete, it remains in local device storage until a later target-page check removes expired data or the user clears extension data.
The extension does not permanently store transcript text, video titles, or video URLs.
Network and third-party services
The extension retrieves transcript and caption data from YouTube only when the user uses the extension on a YouTube video page.
When the user clicks a ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude button, the extension prepares a prompt containing the selected video transcript and opens the selected AI service. The prompt is placed into that service’s input field so the user can review it before sending. The extension does not automatically submit the prompt.
The selected AI service may process the prompt according to its own terms and privacy policy. Users should review the prompt before sending it.
The extension does not send user data to the developer’s own server. The extension does not use analytics, advertising SDKs, or tracking services.
Clipboard
When the user clicks a copy button, the extension writes the transcript text to the user’s clipboard. When the user clicks a ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude button, the extension also writes the prepared summary prompt to the clipboard, so the text is available to paste if the AI service’s input field cannot be filled automatically. Clipboard writes happen only after a user action, and the extension never reads the clipboard.
Data sharing
The developer does not sell, rent, or share user data with advertisers or data brokers.
The extension only transfers data to third-party services when necessary for the user-facing feature selected by the user:
- YouTube, to retrieve transcript/caption data for the current video.
- ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, when the user chooses to prepare a prompt for that service.
Data retention and deletion
Settings stored in Chrome local storage remain on the user’s device until the user changes them, clears extension storage, or removes the extension.
Temporary AI prompts are removed after the target AI page successfully receives them. If a handoff does not complete, the temporary prompt can remain in local device storage until a later target-page check removes expired data or the user clears extension data. Users can delete all extension data by removing the extension from Chrome or clearing the extension’s site/storage data.
Security
The extension does not use remote code. It does not execute code from the developer’s server or from third-party servers. Network requests use HTTPS URLs.
Limited use
The extension’s use of information is limited to providing and improving its single purpose: copying YouTube transcripts/captions and preparing user-controlled AI summary prompts. The extension does not use user data for advertising, profiling, or unrelated purposes.
